Keyscape (2021).
Keyscape is a data sculpture that solidfies the usage of my keyboard from December 2020 to January 2021. Using a Python script I recorded about a half of a million individual keystrokes, which I compiled and mapped linearly on a 3D keyboard model, which I then 3D printed into custom keycaps whose z-heights correspond directly to how many times I pressed the key. This project was an exercise in reclaiming my “data exhaust”, and framing it as an additive process rather than one where the usage of keys literally erodes the plastic of the keycap.
